La Francesa is characterised by the huge variety of sponges that cover the rocky outcroppings and the smaller reef heads as they stretch out into the soft white sands parallel to the shore. Schools of French grunt and schoolmaster snapper find protection amongst the giant purple barrel sponges whilst bluespotted groupers find shelter inside them. Brightly coloured twisted rope sponges and gorgonians provide cover for a myriad of blue chromis, damselfish and tiny basslets that flit and dance in the shallow sunlight.
